The directors of the firm consist of Johan van Zyl (B Proc UP, Adv Tax Cert UNISA), admitted solicitor in the UK and Wales (non-practicing), Tershia Calien (LLB UP) and Amorie Le Roux (LLB, LLM - VAT, Environmental Law, Estate Duty/Transfer Duty and Donations Tax, Commercial Contracts).
Johan van ZylJohan is a practicing attorney and conveyancer admitted to the High Courts of South Africa. He also qualified as a solicitor and, in addition to his admission in South Africa, is also admitted as a solicitor to the High Courts of England and Wales. He specialises in property law, property developments, commercial law, drafting of commercial contracts, tax law and all matters relating to estate planning and trust law.
As child Johan was fortunate to grow up in various different countries as his father was a diplomat. During his school career he was exposed to various different nationalities and cultures giving him an open minded approach to his colleagues and clients alike.
Johan studied at the University of Pretoria and obtained the B-Proc degree in 1995. He was admitted as an attorney and conveyancer to the High Court in 1997, obtained the 2 year post graduate Advance Taxation qualification at the University of South Africa in 2000 and was admitted as a solicitor to the High Courts of England and Wales in 2009. Johan started the practice in 1998 under the now defunct JL van Zyl Attorneys and Associates.
As a practicing attorney and director of various boards Johan has distinguished himself as a property and commercial legal specialist. He has been pivotal in successfully negotiating various large commercial transactions. He has settled various international commercial agreements in the IT, mobile, mining, clothing and franchise industries and in addition, has assisted many property developers with all legal aspects of a property development, from inception up and to conclusion.
As confirmation of Johan's expertise and knowledge in the property and commercial fields he acts as legal representative of various large corporations such as the Public Investments Corporation, one of the largest investment managers on the African continent that manages in excess of R739 billion of assets (as at 31 March 2009). Johan has also been pivotal in ensuring the appointment and ongoing representation of Wessels & van Zyl Inc on the panels of Absa Bank, First National Bank, Standard Bank and Nedbank. Other clients include Old Mutual, Liberty, PSG and Atterbury Property Group, to mention a few.
Johan has a broad client base comprising of listed companies, family businesses, property developers, investors and BEE empowered companies, and thereby will unlock various opportunities to any company wishing to excel in the residential and commercial property market. His knowledge of the intricacies of the property industry has distinguished him as a valuable asset.
Johan is the founding member of Wessels & van Zyl Inc (previously known as JL van Zyl & Associates). On 1 March 2008 Johan sold his practice to Wessels & van Zyl Inc, an incorporated company. Johan is currently the managing director of Wessels & van Zyl Inc and acts in his capacity as director and consultant to various companies.
Tershia CalienThe firm's litigation department is spearheaded by Tershia Calien (LLB UP). Tershia Calien one of the directors of Wessels & van Zyl Inc. Ms Calien studied at the University of Pretoria and obtainded her LLB degree in 2005. She was admitted as an attorney to the High Court in 2006 and furthermore has right of appearance in the High Court. Ms Calien was employed as a Professional Assistant at Wessels & Van Zyl Attorneys in 2007 and after distinguising herself as an excellent attorney became a director of the firm Wessels & Van Zyl Incorporated in March 2008. Ms Calien has experience in the fields of commercial, company, insurance, property, criminal and family law litigation in the High and Magistrates court.
Ms Calien has also been admitted as a notary.
Amorie Le RouxLLB, LLM (VAT, Environmental Law, Estate Duty/Transfer Duty and Donations Tax, Commercial Contracts)
Amorie completed her LLB and LLM degrees and was admitted as an attorney on 6 January 2004 and as a Conveyancer and a Notary Public on 26 February 2004. She specializes in all aspects of Real Estate Law as well as in Commercial Agreements such as Shareholders Agreements, Sale of Share Agreements, Joint Venture Agreements and the like.
Amorie is a member of the Property Law Committee of the Pretoria Attorneys Association. She lectures conveyancing support staff and estate agents on a variety of Real Estate Law related subjects.
As a Notary, Amorie also specializes in all notarially related work including Notarial Tie Agreements, Notarial Servitudes, Notarial Cessions, Antenuptial Contracts, Notarial execution of Prospecting and Mining Agreements and Apostille.
As a conveyancer Amorie attends to all aspects of law related to conveyancing such as Township Establishment, Sectional Title Schemes, Property Development and Development Structures and Purchase and Sale of Immovable Properties.
